Friday Foodstuffs 03.27.09 – To Sleep: Perchance To Post

This just in: lack of sleep leads to lacking in other areas.

Just when our little Lizzie was giving us nice 4- to 5-hour blocks of sleep at night, presto change-o, she’s back to being up every couple of hours (probably a growth spurt). Needless to say, Lisa and I are sleepy and cranky these days and have not been able to complete a post (or even a sentence or a thought) this week. We should have a truckload of posts next week, so please be patient as we try to catch up with our sleep and our posts.

But you really don’t want to read about our sleepy, cranky selves, do you?

Right-o. Let’s get to the food fun!

Lots of Festivals of Food things are happening this weekend: on Saturday, Natali Vineyards in Cape May Courthouse is having its Spring Fling, North Wildwood will be having a Greek Independence Day Celebration, and Our Lady of Sorrows Church in Linwood will be having its annual Chili Cook-Off and Dinner. This weekend is also all about the dandelion down in Vineland area; the 36th Annual Dandelion Dinner & Beer Festival will take place tomorrow night at Merighi’s Savoy Inn in Buena Vista Township, and Bellview Winery in Landisville is having its Dandelion Wine Release Weekend this weekend. Lastly, the Girlfriends Getaway Weekend is this weekend at the Cape May Winery.

On the dinner menu this weekend is the Flying Fish Beer Dinner tonight at The Mad Batter Restaurant & Bar in Cape May and the Homebrewers Contest on Sunday at High Street Grill in Mount Holly. In addition, The Flanders Hotel in Ocean City is having a wine tasting event this Sunday from 2PM to 5PM for $75 per person. Annata Wine Bar in Hammonton is having a Gourmet Wine Dinner and Grand Tasting on the 31st for $63 per person.

Recipe Review

Let’s start you off with some soup: your choice of Jersey Bites’ Creamy Basil Tomato Soup or Taste As You Go’s spin in Giada’s Tuscan White Bean and Garlic Soup.

Springtime means asparagus time, so how about a Leek & Asparagus Quiche from Stacey Snacks and a Warm and Smokey Asparagus Salad from The Hungry Mouse.

Kitchen Girl Jo gives us Puttanesca Sauce…her way!

Chef E at Behind The Wheel makes Osso Busso, and it looks osso good.

And for dessert, Patsy of Family, Friends and Food has Brownies that may just rock your world!

And in the news…

* The saucy world of South Jersey chefs: two chefs are being sued by the South Jersey Restaurant Association over this week’s SJ Restaurant Week. Read the article and decide for yourself.

* The ‘FOR SALE’ sign is officially up in front of Olga’s Diner. The asking price: $5.8 million.

* The Cherry Hill Mall has had a $218 million makeover, which includes a “Restaurant Row” section. I like this concept, and I wonder if other malls will follow suit down the road if it’s successful.

* Local farms express some concerns about a potential new federal food safety agency.

* The Bacon Resurgence! Resistance is futile!

* The White House (no – not the subshop in AC, the one in DC) has broken ground on their kitchen garden.

* Pizza ads on school tests? Yep, evidently so.

* Buying groceries at an auction? Yep, evidently so.

* And on a more somber note, please say a prayer for the families of the four fisherman lost 75 miles off of Cape May this past Tuesday.
