Friday Foodstuffs 5.8.09 – Of Course You Realize This Means War!

Coming up at the end of May is an event called Chef Wars, which is being organized by the good folks at South Jersey Hot Chefs. This competitio…oh fleh, this is no good. I need to talk about this in a bigger and bolder way.

I’ve got an idea. Excuse me a moment…

That’s better. So, you get the idea: Chef Wars is competition between members of SJ Hot Chefs. Eight member chefs will compete in single-elimination home-and-home match-ups, meaning that each chef will have a chance to cook at their own restaurant, then at the other chef’s place. Winners are determined by the diners. And if there’s a tie, it’s either penalty kicks or away goals (heh heh – soccer humor). Anyway, get more of the details here.

So what’s happening this weekend? Well, I’ll tell you – I hope you like wine, because the fermented grape juice will be a-flowing this weekend. Tonight is the Avalon Chamber of Commerce Wine & Spirits Festival, and they promise that over 200 wines available to sample, as well as flavored vodkas and dishes from local restaurants. Not so fast! says Wine Spectator’s Grand Tour, which will be held tomorrow at the Borgata in Atlantic City. They will have wines from more than 200 of the best wineries in the world, so there! And then the Garden State Wine Growers Association jumps in and says so’s your mother! with their Mother’s Day Wine Trail Weekend this weekend, which I have already blogged about here.

The only Festival of Food event not happening this weekend is the Strawberry Festival at Sweet Life Bakery in Vineland. Chef Stephen sent out an email this week to make this announcement, as well to say that the new date will be June 6th.

Saturday will be a good day to Cook! Learn! Eat! as well; you have the Children’s Open Hearth Cooking and Craft Workshop at Hancock House State Historic Site in Hancocks Bridge, winemaker Robert Hall at Red, White & Brew in Mount Holly and Cooking for Couples – Spanish Seafood and Spice at Kitchen Kapers in Moorestown.

  1. As usual, great list. The chef wars look awesome. Maybe we can get a little group together and all meet up?

  2. Would the “strawberry festival” that sweet life is participating in happen to be the one held at Dutch Neck Village?

  3. Josie – no, these are two separate events, so you can get twice the strawberry fun! And thanks for following us. – John
