Picture yourself sitting at home, like what you’re probably doing now reading this, and you’re thinking that this weekend would be a good time to get out and enjoy the fall weather. But where should you go? Is there anything special going on this weekend?
Hoo boy…is there ever!
This is one of the busiest festival weekends I can remember since I have doing the Festivals of Food lists. If you can’t find anything appealing food-wise this weekend, then you clearly don’t like food. That’s all I can say.
Let’s start with the events running all weekend. Seaside Heights is having its first ever barbecue competition, Que By The Sea, which will run though Sunday. The same holds true for the annual Egyptian Festival at St. Anthony’s Coptic Orthodox Church in Medford. And if you’re looking for, erm, wineish, this is another Cape May Wine Weekend.
So while these events go on all weekend, a whole slew of festivals will be taking place on Saturday. There will be a wine tasting, chili cook-off and a burger competition at theWoodstown Fall Festival, a pie contest and other treats at the Lacey Apple Festival in Forked River, and sample the chili and ribs at the Rock-n-Roll-n-Ribs-n-Chili Cook Off on Landis Avenue in Vineland.
Did you want more chili cook-offs? Because, y’know, I got more chili cook-offs. The Fall Festival at War Memorial Park in Mays Landing will have one, and the Spirit of Chesterfield Festival in Chesterfield will have one as well.
Seafood? Check out the Commercial Township Seafood Festival.
Italian? Look no further than the Pizza-Pasta-Pastry Italian Food Festival on Washington Street in Toms River.
Wine tastings with your dog? It’s Wag’n & Wine’n at Mill Race Village in Mount Holly.
And let’s not forget BookFest 2009 – A Taste of the Arts! at the Ocean County Library in Toms River.
What’s happening in the restaurants this weekend? Well, it’s happening a lot at the farms, actually. Saturday and Sunday will have special dinners being served at local farm. Saturday’s Feast In The Fields will be taking place at Hlubik Farms in Chesterfield (two Chesterfield mentions in one post – yeah!), and Sunday’s Feast in the Fields will be at 1895 Organic Farm in Lumberton.
Looking to increase your culinary knowledge base this weekend? Saturday will have a French Pastry Class at In the Kitchen Cooking School in Haddonfield and Filipino Fun with FAMAR at the Jackson Branch of the Ocean County Library. Sunday will be all about wine in Cape May with the Cape May Wine Trail and Cape May Wine School. And at Kitchen Kapers, Sunday will be Kids in the Kitchen: Deliciously Deceptive Breakfast.
And in the news this week…
Another article about the increased interest in cooking classes due to people cutting back on eating out.
The Mack in Mack and Manco’s in Ocean City passed away last Friday.
Yet another report of a food delivery person being attacked. Sadly, I see these articles a little too often.
And local restaurateurs in Atlantic City think the worst is yet to come for their businesses.
Have a nice weekend.
