Friday Foodstuffs 1.14.11: Just What I Want For My Birthday…Jersey’s Finest!

I don’t know how we planned it, but our two kids have their birthdays four days apart. And, to makes things even more interesting, they occur a few weeks before Christmas. So basically they have two Christmases. Our son is now in full ‘I want this and this and this’ mode, while our daughter is just starting to get the gift concept.

As for me, my birthday is tomorrow – and I have reached the point in my life where I don’t have a set list of things to ask for in terms of gifts. In fact, just some simple things would be nice: a quiet afternoon, a nice dinner, some special time with Lisa…really basic stuff. So imagine my surprise when I found out that Iron Hill Brewery and Flying Fish were teaming up to have a special brew poured on my birthday. That was awfully nice of them.

(OK – I know their collaboration didn’t have anything to do with me, but indulge for a moment.)

Tomorrow at Iron Hill Brewery’s Maple Shade location, they will be serving a blended brew called Jersey’s Finest. This beer mixes Iron Hill’s Luca Brasi (coffee stout) with Flying Fish’s Exit 13 (chocolate stout). Mmmmm…chocolate and coffee…sounds like you should be able to serve it hot with a shot of amaretto. The fun starts at 4PM, and lasts until the beer runs out, which might be pretty quick. We will attempt to sample some ourselves.

Now, for the rest of your weekend options…

For tonight, a choice of Iberia or Scotland. Renault Winery is having a Classic Wines from Spain & Portugal event at their winery in Egg Harbor City starting at 6:30PM. In mount Holly, it’s the annual Robert Burns Dinner at the Library and Lyceum with the food provided by High Street Grill.

Sharrott Winery in Blue Anchor is having a Chardonnay Vertical Weekend on Saturday and Sunday from 11AM to 5PM.

Since Monday is a holiday, why not make your way to the 2nd Annual Mac Off at the Collingswood Community Center. The fun starts at 6PM, and is only $10 per person ($4 per child).

And on the cooking class schedule…

Tonight: Date Night: Gourmet Night at Viking Cooking School in Atlantic City and Bon Appetit: Italian Dinner Classics at Sur La Table in Marlton.

Tomorrow: Pasta Workshop at Sur La Table, a Celebration Brunch and a Steak, Roast and Chop Workshop at Viking Cooking School, and a Five Star Cuisine for Couples at Kitchen Kapers in Moorestown.

Sunday: Cobblers, Crisps and Crumbles at Sur La Table, Kids in the Kitchen – Quick Breads at Kitchen Kapers, and a Southern Italian Dinner Party at Viking Cooking School.

Blogging Out Hunger

A true servant to those in need passed away this week. Sister Jean Webster, who helped feed the hungry in Atlantic City, died at the age of 76. Her kitchen will stay open and keep on serving.

Campbell’s Soup made a $25,000 donation to the Food Bank of South Jersey this week.

Cabana’s Beach Bar and Grill in Cape May is having a Bypass Hunger Party tomorrow starting at 6PM.

And in the news this week…

Forecasters are seeing 2011 as the best year for the restaurant industry since 2008.

Ventura’s Restaurant & Bar in Voorhees has sold its land and liquor license to developers, but they’re not going away any time soon.

And today is the grand re-opening of Sweet Life Bakery in Vineland, as our friends Stephen and Jill get back to business after the birth of their first child. Good luck guys!
