Friday Foodstuffs 1.21.11: Get Ready for Another Chef Wars Sequel

A long time ago in restaurants far, far away…well, not quite so far way…and, to be honest, not so long ago either…

It is about that time for another installment of SJ Hot Chefs’ Chef Wars competition. Chef Wars is a chef vs chef battle in which each chef gets to host one half of the competition in their own restaurant, and you the taster decide who wins! The chefs that take part in these battles are some of the best young chefs in the South Jersey area. Tara Nurin’s recent piece in the Courier-Post highlighted seven chefs in South Jersey you need to know now; expect to see some of those chefs participating in Chef Wars.

When does the fun start? The week of January 31, as per the SJ Hot Chefs website. Keep checking their site as well as our Events page for the specific matchups, dates and times. And may the fork be with you…because eating with your hands could be messy.

If you can’t wait until the 31st for some culinary competition…how about a battle for sudsy supremacy? High Street Grill in Mount Holly is starting up another round of Beer Wars, and the first contest is tomorrow. And the first battle will be Allagash v Yards, so it’s an all-East Coast affair. The fun starts at 12PM, and costs $25 per person.

What else is going on this weekend? Merighi’s Savoy Inn in Vineland is hosting St. Mary’s School Wine and Chocolate Social tonight starting at 6:30PM. Natali Vineyards is holding its annual “Kick The Winter Blues” Wine Festival tomorrow at their Cape May Court House location from 12PM to 5PM. And on Saturday and Sunday, you can choose to have an Alpine Winter Weekend at Bellview Winery in Landisville, OR, a Tap-a-Tank Weekend at Sharrott Winery in Blue Anchor.

One more thing to mention…today is National Pie Day, and Sweet Life Bakery in Vineland is having a pie celebration today and tomorrow. Check their site for details, and make sure to call ahead if you want any pies. They go very fast!

Here’s the cooking class schedule for the weekend:

Tonight: it’s Date Night: Gourmet Tuscan at Sur La Table in Marlton.

Tomorrow: an Asian Noodle Workshop at Sur La Table and a Tailgating Party at Viking Cooking School in Atlantic City.

Sunday: Provencal Sunday Supper at Sur La Table and an Italian Seafood Dinner at Viking Cooking School.
