Friday Foodstuffs 3.11.11: Skipping the Appetizer

Lots going on around here, so I’m going to skip the appetizer and get right to the entree…

Tonight, you have the Grapes & Grain South Jersey event going on at Auletto Caterers in Almonesson starting at 7PM. On the calendar for tomorrow is the Chili and Chowder Challenge at Congress Hall in Cape May from 1PM to 5PM, the Chili Fest at the Maple Shade Congregational Church from 5PM to 7PM, and the next episode of Beer Wars II 2011 at High Street Grill in Mount Holly at 12PM. And this weekend is the France on Tour Weekend event at Bellview Winery in Landisville. Admission is $5 a person.

Here’s your cooking class schedule for the weekend:

Tonight: Food and Wine Pairing: Napa Valley at Viking Cooking School in Atlantic City and Kids in the Kitchen – Asian Delights at Kitchen Kapers in Moorestown.

Tomorrow: Sustainable Fisheries seminar at the Long Beach Island Foundation of the Arts and Sciences in Loveladies, a Fondue and Wine Party and a Surf and Turf Workshop at Viking Cooking School, Kids in the Kitchen – The Cupcake Corner at Kitchen Kapers and a 2-Day Cake Baking and Decorating Workshop at Sur La Table in Marlton.

Sunday: a Champagne Brunch at Viking Cooking School and Kids in the Kitchen – It’s Not Easy Being Green at Kitchen Kapers.

Blogging Out Hunger

On Sunday, an Empty Bowl Dinner will be held at the Moorestown Friends Meeting House, with proceeds going towards the Food Bank of South Jersey and scholarships for underprivileged kids in the area.

A food drive is being conducted through the Toms River Regional School system this month.

Not necessarily about hunger, but important still: Sweet Life Bakery in Vineland is helping to raise funds for Habitat for Humanity through the sale of a very special cupcake this month.

And in the news this week…

We finally have dates for the grand opening of the Landis MarketPlace: June 2, 3 and 4.

If you’ve ever driven out to Seaside Heights and have passed a rundown old restaurant right before the bridge that featured Nick “The Greek”? Well, evidently a new restaurant is going up there.

I also noticed that the Riverside Diner location on Route 9 here in Lacey is going to be a new location for El Tenampa, which already has locations in Toms River, Manahawkin and Brick.

If good fences make good neighbors, will a good soundproof pavilion help make Maynard’s Cafe a good neighbor in Margate?

Ye Olde Midway Inn in Buena, built in 1779, was torn down this week.

And an icon (of sorts) of the food and beverage industry passed away this week: Joe Canal.

Have a great weekend!
