Learn About Laotian Cooking

You would think, at this point, it would be hard to find an Asian cuisine that is not talked about much these days. And yet, there is one country that does not seem to get much attention at all.

Let’s talk Laos.

Situated between China, Thailand, Vietnam and Cambodia, Laos certainly has great culinary influences from its neighbors. And, like Vietnam, there are touches of French cooking as well.

As part of their celebration of Asian American Heritage Month, Ocean County Library is going to have a series of Laotian cooking demonstrations later this month at a number of their branches. These demonstrations will be performed by Penn Hongthong, cooking instructor, caterer and author of two Laotian cookbooks: Simple Laotian Cooking (2003) and Healthy Lao Cuisine (2009). She has also presented Laotian cuisine on her own “Simple Lao Cuisine” show on public television.

If you’re interested, here’s the schedule of cooking demos Ms. Honthong will be conducting:

5/23 – Jackson Branch, 2 Jackson Drive. 732.928.4400. Program starts at 7PM.

5/24 – Point Pleasant Beach Branch, 710 McLean Avenue. 732.892.4575. Program starts at 7PM.

5/25 – Little Egg Harbor Branch, 290 Mathistown Road. 609.294.1197. Program starts at 7PM.

5/26 – Berkeley Branch, 30 Station Road, Bayville. 732.269.2144. Program starts at 7PM.

The cooking demonstrations are free to attend, but you must call in advance to reserve a spot

  1. My husband and I were her assistants at a Share Our Strength “Taste of the Nation” tasting event a few years back. It was a difficult “sell” to get people to try black beans as a dessert… but the other chefs loved it and so did I!

Laotian cusine is very healthy and of course, yummy. You should definitely try to make one of her programs.

  2. That is one cuisine I haven’t found in New Jersey yet. If you meet her, please ask if she knows of any Laotian places in NJ. I need a Laotian flag on the EthnicNJ.com map!
