Cooking Classes for Kids This Summer in South Jersey

Moms…Dads…come over here…closer…closer…can the kids see the screen?

No? Good. Now I can talk to you.

We know that the school year is rapidly coming to an end, and I am sure many of you are wondering how to keep the little darlings occupied. Have you considered enrolling them in a cooking class? I know I know – your kids hear ‘class’ and ‘summer’ in the same sentence and the wailing and gnashing of teeth commences in a nanosecond. BUT – if they like cooking, it could be be a fun change of pace from the usual summer activities.

The Burlington County Library System offers fee cooking classes for kids throughout the year. The classes are called Apron Strings, and are usually aimed at very little ones (ages 3 to 6). But sometimes, they also will have a class for kids a little older as well. Here are some upcoming Apron String classes, and please remember that you need to call ahead to register:

For kids ages 7 to 10

The Pop Shop in Collingswood, which focuses very much on being kid-friendly and fun, usually offers cooking class each month for kids. One class is for kids ages 2 1/2 to 5, and takes place from 10:30AM to 11:30AM. Another class is offered for kids from Grades K to 5, and goes from 4:30PM to 5:30PM. The cost for each class is $15 per child.

If you think your child has a genuine interest in cooking and would enjoy a whole weeks’ worth of instruction, you have some exciting options.

The Lower Township Recreation Department has its annual Fun Food Cooking and Baking Camps that are held at Lower Cape May Regional High School. The cooking camp is for kids Grades 1 to 6, and the baking camp is for kids in Grades 4 to 8. The camps are $185 for the week, and are held two times during the summer. The Academy of Culinary Arts at Atlantic Cape Community College is known for its training and placing young chefs into the restaurant industry, but they also offer summer camps for kids ages 8 to 12. Their Kids in the Kitchen program will run from from 9AM to 1PM for the following weeks:

June 20-23

July 11-14

August 8-11

The cost for the week is $195 per child. Call the Academy at 609.625.1111 for more details.

Kitchen Kapers in Moorestown regularly has its own Kids in the Kitchen classes on weekends. During the summer, though, they offer a week of cooking summer camp. This year, they will be running their camp four times:

6/27-7/1 – Spring into Summer Camp

7/11-15 – Kids in the Kitchen Summer Camp

7/25-29 – Kids in the Kitchen Summer Camp

8/22-26 – Kids in the Kitchen Summer Camp

The classes run from 1:30PM to 4PM and cost $250 per child.

And Sur La Table in Marlton also has their summer cooking camps for kids taking place in July. They offer two sets of classes: one for kids ages 8 to 12, and another for kids ages 13 to 17. The camp is $350 per child. Here is their upcoming schedule:
