Friday Foodstuffs 7.1.11: Happy Fourth!

Ummm…something tells me it didn’t really go down like that. But aren’t you glad we all don’t have to wear corsets, stockings and wool jackets in this summer heat anymore?

Well, since most of us are sticking with simple things for the glorious Fourth of July (like lying on the beach, backyard barbecues,or taking in the local fireworks), the pickings are slim this weekend. But don’t despair, there’s a few things afoot…

On Saturday, there’s the LeBlon Cachaca Tasting at Red, White and Brew in Margate, and on Sunday the Breakfast Car Show at the Silver Diner in Cherry Hill. And starting on the Fourth and running all week is the Cumberland County Fair at the Cumberland County Fairgrounds in Millville.

If you still have a hankering to cook, but your family doesn’t want the heat generated by your kitchen, take a cooking class!

Tonight: Grilling & Barbecuing at Long Beach Island Foundation of the Arts and Sciences in Loveladies, Fourth of July Celebration at Viking Cooking School at  Harrah’s Resort in Atlantic City, Summer Steak Night at
Sur La Table in Marlton.

Saturday: Best of Class: Grilling and Date Night: Love at First Bite at Viking Cooking School.

Sunday: Best of Class: Cocktail Party and the Grilling Workshop at Viking Cooking School.

The funky mural from the old Community FoodBank of New Jersey Southerm Branch building will be saved and put on display.

And in the news this week…

This stinks! Stink bugs are becoming a real menace for local farmers. In fact, federal approval was given for a special insecticide to be used to combat these little stinkers.

This stinks, too! An ugly employee stealing money at The Ugly Mug in Cape May.

The Partnership for the Delaware Estuary believes this year will be a good one for oysters.

And with two microbreweries getting ready to open in Cape May County, 2011 is shaping up to be a good one for beer, too!

Remember Zaberer’s? If you ever went, or only heard about it, read this fun little article about Ed Zaberer and his famous restaurant.

The TV show “Tough Cookies”, which will follow the hijinks of Crazy Susan’s Cookies in Ocean City, is debuting on July 11.

Congrats to Chef Scott Anderson of Elements in Princeton for winning the Jersey Seafood Challenge yesterday!

And good luck to the new Sweet Jenny’s, which will have its opening tonight at the old Hurricane House location on Bay Avenue in Barnegat. Sounds like it won’t look anything like the log cabin feel of the original, but if the food is just as good, we will certainly be coming back.

Enjoy your holiday weekend!
