Friday Foodstuffs 7.15.11: Iiiiiice Creeeeeeeaaammmm!!!!!

Sometimes I think this “unofficial national holiday” thing has gotten out of hand. I mean, this month alone there are, apparently, thirty-one: one for each day of the month.  Looks like we missed I Forgot Day (the 2nd…ummm,looks like we forgot), which is also World UFO Day (is there a link here?), as well as National Disobedience Day(3rd). Following close on its heels is National Nude Day (14th), which, of course is also Pandemonium Day. But  it’s not too late to do your holiday shopping for Yellow Pig Day (17th) or Ratcatcher’s Day (22nd)! …oy. Admittedly, there are a few I can get behind; Chocolate Day(7th) comes to mind. But nothing makes more sense in mid-July, nor gives such pleasure, as National Ice Cream Day! It happens to be this Sunday, but you can start celebrating this afternoon!

The Camden County Library Bellmawr Branch has I Scream, You Scream, Let’s Have Ice Cream! starting  at 2:30PM. Admission is free, but you must register in advance, so hurry! I’ll bet you can score some cool treats over at the The 136th Feast of Our Lady of Mt Carmel Italian Festival in Hammonton that started on Monday and wraps up Saturday; or maybe at the other big shindig at the Shore, The Ocean County Fair at Robert J Miller Air Park  in Berkeley Twp (which started on Tuesday and finishes on Sunday). If you want a big, fat official festival focused only on the goodness of this holiday, get to Washington Street in Toms River this Saturday for the  New Jersey State Ice Cream Festival . You’ve also got the Sundaes on Sunday Festival at Kennedy Park in Somers Point, on, well, Sunday!

Not a fan of ice cream? No problem, there’s still lots going on. Tonight is the Merchants in Venice Seafood Festival on Asbury Avenue  in Ocean City, and the Summerfest Gala weekend (tonight through Sunday) begins at Balic Winery in Mays Landing. On Saturday you’ve got Pour-A-Palooza at The Pour House  in Westmont, yet another Seafood Festival in Vineland, the Obon Memorial Folk Dance Festival at the Seabrook Buddhist Temple in Upper Deerfield Twp.,  a Celebrity Chef Wine Pairing Dinner Hawk Haven Vineyard and Winery in Rio Grande, and the Barrel Trail / Walk in the Vineyard Wine Trail Weekend begins at participating wineries throughout South Jersey. On Sunday, if you didn’t get enough of blueberries yet, there’s the Blueberry Festival at Lutheran Church of Our Saviour in Stone Harbor.

There’s also a dizzying array of restaurant weeks that start this weekend. From Sunday to next Saturday is Farm to Fork Week with participating SJ Hot Chefs restaurants in Burlington, Camden and Gloucester counties and Belgian Independence Week at Cork Genuine Food & Drink in  Westmont; from Monday to next Friday is Farm Fresh Collingswood Week at Participating restaurants in Collingswood.

No farmers’ market news this week, but get out there and support your local one and get some farm-fresh goodies!

And in the news this week…

This week was the opening of the new Culinary Arts, Tourism and Hospitality Center of Burlington County College in Mount Holly. Check our Cooking Classes page for cooking classes being offered.

The Purple Penguin in Franklin Twp is going green.

And my cousin Margo Pellegrino made a valiant effort, but in the end could not complete the entire Jersey shore trip via stand-up paddleboard. A great effort, though, and it was for a great cause. Keep paddling, Margo!

Have a great weekend!
