I try not to get too personal when it comes to this site, but this is a subject that is very close to my heart.
It’s hard to understand what autism is all about, until you have a child that is diagnosed with it. Our son has Asperger’s Syndrome, which is within the autism spectrum. He’s very high functioning, but he does have difficulty with socialization. It can make situations hard to deal with at times. But then, we have been to autism events and have seen parents dealing with children who are lower functioning, and can only imagine how much of a struggle it can be on a day-to-day basis.
While our understanding of autism grows more and more, there’s so much more that we still don’t know. There are many organizations now helping with research and support. Autism Speaks is the largest of the autism advocacy groups out there, and this Thursday they are having a special dining event with the help of a number of South Jersey restaurants. Dine Out for Autism Speaks is a special fundraising event where 20% of your check will go directly towards Autism Speaks to help in their research and support.
