I have to admit that I really really want to try muskrat this year. Call me crazy, nutso, batty…but by all means, call me for dinner if you’re frying up some Ondatra zibethicus. Muskrat dinners are a pretty rare occurrence these days, but a couple are still hanging on and going strong. And late January / early February is when you can find them, and Salem County is the location where you can find them.
On January 28, it’s the annual Muskrat Dinner served at the Lower Alloways Creek Firehouse on Locust Island Road in Hancock’s Bridge. There will be seatings at 4PM, 5PM and 6PM. The cost per person is $30, and you are going to need to call in advance to get tickets. Don’t show up on the 28th looking to get in, because it will be sold out. The numbers to call for tickets are 856.339.9241 and 609.420.1216. Also on the menu is pepper cabbage, which is a nod to the Pennsylvania Dutch.
If you miss your chance on January 28, there will be another Muskrat Dinner on February 3 at the Salem FOE at 222 East Broadway in Salem. Cocktails start at 5PM, and dinner will be served at 6PM. The cost for this dinner is also $30 per person. As with the LAC Firehouse dinner, you need to call ahead to order tickets. The number is 856.935.2357, and yes, this one sells out as well.
UPDATE – There will also be a Muskrat Dinner at the VFW Post #253 in Elsinboro Township on Saturday February 4 from 5PM to 7PM. The dinner is $30, and tickets must be purchased in advance. Call 856.935.7740 for information and to purchase tickets.
