When did Jersey turn into Florida? I mean really – enough with the scattered thunderstorms already! Hopefully, the rain can hold off enough for you to get out and enjoy one of a number of food festivals going on this weekend.
If you love Jersey blueberries, this is THE weekend to hit the festival trail. You have the two big, boffo blueberry events of the year on consecutive days. On Saturday, it’s the Blueberry Festival at Whitesbog Village in Browns Mills from 10AM to 4PM. If you drive your car in and park, it’s $8 per carload…but if you park along the road of hoof it in, it’s $5 per person. Choose wisely. They will be celebrating the centannial of the cultivated highbush blueberry, which thrives in the sandy soil of the Pine Barrens. If the history angle is not your thing, then plunge your face into the blueberry pie eating contest.
Then it’s Hammonton’s turn on Sunday with their annual Red, White & Blueberry Festival from 10AM to 5PM at Hammonton High School. This event is free to attend and has anything and everything blueberry that you could want: pies, cakes, pizza and salsa (just to name a few). If you’re not into blueberry salsa, then plunge your face into the blueberry pie eating contest.
Of course, you have the Jersey Shore Wine Festival happening at Tropicana Casino and Resort in Atlantic City on Saturday and Sunday. We may have mentioned this event already. Possibly.
You don’t have to have an ouce of Italian blood in you to enjoy the Italian-American Festival along Olde New Jersey Avenue in North Wildwood this weekend. Not only will you the usual yummy suspects at an Italain festival, but you will also have a meatball relay race and pizza tossing exhibitions (hopefully not at the same time…that could be messy). the festival runs through Sunday.
Plenty more goings on happening this Saturday, including the Jazzy Scallop and Seafood Festival at Viking Village in Barnegat Light, the Red Wine & Blues Festival at Tuckerton Seaport, and Summer Brew at the Island Heights Volunteer Fire Co. We’re Ocean County, and we’re kicking some gastro butt this weekend!
If you care to venture out of South Jersey this weekend…
It’s Sippin’ on the River weekend along the Navesink in Red Bank. Chck out their site for the events…and yes, they do spell flavor with a ‘u’ in it.
Here’s your cooking class schedule for the weekend:
Sunday: Southern Specialties from the hit movie “The Help” and Easy Summer Dinner Party at Viking Cooking School.
