You may be waiting on those red lovelys (I’m talking about the Jersey tomato), and tasting the first peaches of the season, but it’s the blueberry that’s king right now. Why, even the supermarket blues are fat and juicy, and the label is proclaiming their origin as “Hammonton, NJ”! So if you simply can’t get enough just yet, you’ve got some great events this weekend.
We urge you to go out and support the Camden Children’s Garden (did you know some evil parking lot builders want to make it their own and tear it down?) and get your fix at the same time at the BlueBEARyBlast and Celebrate NJ Day Family Festival on Saturday and Sunday, from 1PM to 4PM. Or if you’d rather hang out in Pine Barrens, home of the fruit’s origin, check out the Blueberry Tasting at Whitesbog Village this Sunday in Browns Mills from 1PM to 3PM (for a mere $5 per person!). You’ve also got the 13th Annual Blueberry Festival at Our Savior Lutheran Church in Stone Harbor on Sunday, from 6:30PM to 8:30PM.
Maybe you’d rather check out a homegrown festival in blueberry country. Going on now until Tuesday the 16th is the Feast of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Italian Festival at the Mount Carmel Grounds in Hammonton, and admission is free. Something tells me there will be blueberry goodies there, too…. Or maybe you’re at the shore and want a taste of good old fashioned deep fried candy bars (and other fairground attractions), the Ocean County Fair at Robert J Miller Air Park in Berkeley Township will be finishing up this weekend: 11AM to 11PM (Friday-Saturday), 11AM to 5PM (Sunday). Cost to get in is $7 per person (free for kids under 10).
Starting Friday, you can get your ‘cue on at the New Jersey State Barbecue Championship, until Sunday on New Jersey Avenue in North Wildwood: 4PM to 11PM (Friday), 10AM to 11PM (Saturday), 10AM to 6PM (Sunday). Free admission, but you have to pay for the goodies served there….perhaps you’re feeling tropical? Well, Camden’s got it’s South Jersey Caribbean Festival happening at Wiggins Park on Saturday from 12PM to 8PM. Free admission.
Also on Saturday is the Wine and Dine on Main event in Mullica Hill from 3:30PM to 9PM, celebrating the best of South Jersey’s homegrown foods and wines with cooking demos using fresh produce from surrounding farms, paired with local wines . …or maybe you’d prefer to attend a Sunset Soiree at the Wetlands Institute in Stone Harbor. The fun includes an assortment of hors d’oeuvres and food fromthe likes of Fuze, Café Loren, Jay’s on Third, the Windrift, special samplings from the Washington Inn, specialty cocktails and tropical- themed drinks. Starts at 6:00PM and runs until sunset, $75 per person.
On Sunday you can keep cool with the Sundaes on Sunday All-You-Can-Eat Ice Cream Festival at Kennedy Park in Somers Point, from 12PM to 6PM. the treats will run you $5 per person (kids under 2 are free). Also starting on Sunday and running through until next Saturday, the 20th, is the Cherry Hill Mall Restaurant Week.
