Eating, Drinking and Cooking in South Jersey This Weekend (7/19-21): Happy Birthday Lucy!

Who’s the female pachyderm i-love-lucy-birthday-largethat was stronger than the storm? Lucy. Damn right.

Who’s looking fine for someone turning 132? Lucy. Can you dig it?

They say that Lucy’s a bad mother- shut your mouth! Hey, I was just talking about Lucy. We can dig it.

And stop following everything I say! Right on.

Oy. Vey.

Anyways, it is amazing to think that Lucy the Elephant has made it through so many trials and tribulations and is still here, upright and standing. Saturday is her birthday, and if you have never seen the ol’ girl…geez, what’s keeping you? Food and festivities will be all part of the celebration.

There will be a multitude of food-related events going on this weekend. I know I’m going to miss a couple, but I will do my best.

To be fair, you got fairs going on this week. The Burlington County Farm Fair and the Cape May County 4-H Fair & Chicken Bar-B-Que will both be running through to Saturday.

If seafood is on your mind, you have some options, such as…

Crabulous Crab Day at the Wetlands Institute in Stone Harbor from 9:30AM to 3PM on Friday. You got crab races, and the losers become part of the crab cake cook-off. Actually, I don’t think that’s how it works, but it certainly would add some pressure on the crabs to win, right? OK – maybe I should just move on to…

…the new See Food event going on this weekend in Ocean City as part of the Night in Venice activities. The See Food festival runs from Friday to Sunday and features a number of the local eateries. Futher down the road…

…is the NJ Crab Festival at the Ice House in Wildwood on Saturday starting at 11AM. Lots of crabby goodness to be served up there, and admission is free.

It’s looking to be another hot weekend, so perhaps some drinks are in order. Our friend and beer ninja Gary Monterosso is going to be a part of Sweet Dreams II: Wine, Craft Beer & Chocolate Tasting at the Noyes Museum this Friday. The fund-raising event for Family Service Association goes from 5:30PM to 9PM and is $35 per person ($60 per couple).

Heritage Vineyards is having a Barrel Tasting event at their Mullica Hill location on Friday and Saturday from 6PM to 9PM. Tickets are $30 per person, and only tickets for Friday are available at this point.

Saturday night is the Dogfish Head Summer Jam at Goodnight Irene’s in Wildwood. Sample some of the wacky funk coming out of Delaware!

Meanwhile, Geraghty’s Pub in Burlington will be celebrating Belgian Independence Day with Belgian beers from 3PM to 6PM.

Balic Winery in Mays Landing is having their annual Customer Appreciation Celebration weekend which will include tastings, food, live music and tours.

This weekend is the Barrel Trail Weekend, with wineries participating throughout New Jersey with special tastings and tours.

And, don’t forget to celebrate National Daiquiri Day by having, well, a daiquiri at Cuba Libre in Atlantic City!

If you’re looking for ethnic celebrations, you’ve picked a good weekend for that! This Saturday you have Atlantic City Carnival going on, along with the Obon Festival at Seabrook Buddhist Temple in Bridgeton, and the beginning of the
Puerto Rican Pride Celebration which will be going on throughout Vineland.

For dessert, there’s the annual New Jersey State Ice Cream Festival this Saturday on Washington Street in Toms River. Looks to be a hot day for ice cream (and it always seems to be for this festival). The festival runs from 11:30AM to 5PM, and tastings are $7.

And, it’s the 3rd Annual Taste of Bordentown along Farnsworth Avenue. Tickets are $15 a piece.

Monday brings the start of the 25th Annual Pine Barrens Festival at Church of the Holy Eucharist in Tabernacle. as well as SJ Hot Chefs Farm to Fork Week. (More on that very soon.)

If you care to venture out of South Jersey this weekend…

Philly has got going on a Hot Dog Cook-Off on South Street and a Summer Ale Festival at the Zoo.

Here is your cooking class schedule for the weekend:
