If you love peaches, then you must be all fuzzy and bursting right now. It’s peach season, and Jersey can hold its own with the varieties of Prunus persica grown here. The New Jersey Peach Promotion Council (yes, we have such a thing here) is helping to get the word out about our peaches and there are a number of exciting events coming up to celebrate.
Those Collingswood restaurants are at it again. From August 6 to 8, dine on a ‘Just Peachy’ special menu being offered by Tortilla Press (along with their Cantina in Merchantville), The Pop Shop, That’s Amore, Bistro di Marino, Benny’s Burger Joint (brand-spanking new!) and Casona.
Further down south, Blueplate in Mullica Hill will be having their own three-day celebration of peaches with a three-course prix fixe menu for $25 a person. Blueplate will be getting their peaches from Holtzhauser Farms in Mullica Hill. The Holtzhauser family has been growing peaches on their farms since 1897, so they must be doing something right.
Meanwhile, at the farmers’ markets, there have been Peach Parties galore…and more to come! Westmont’s farmers’ market will be having a Peach Party on August 14 that will include a peach pie baking contest as well as bobbing for peaches. On August 17, both the Hammonton and the Burlington County farmers’ market will be throwing their Peach Parties. The Peach Queen, just recently crowned at the New Jersey Peach Festival is scheduled to appear in Hammonton.
