When asked to be one of the judges for the upcoming Food Bank of South Jersey’s Hunger Games, I immediately got a panicky feeling. Oh crap, I haven’t seen any of those Hunger Games movies. I’m going to look like an idiot! Then it was explained that the competition would be more like Food Network’s Chopped, and relief came over me more just as quickly. OK, I know how that show works.
Mind you, I may still look like an idiot.
Be that as it may, this Thursday is the next installment of the Food Bank Hunger Games. As with the competition that took place earlier this year, it will be held at the Food Bank of South Jersey’s home location in Pennsauken. Starting at 6:30PM, teams from seven different organizations will be assembling a full meal using ingredients from the food bank and presented to them in a basket “Chopped style.” The meal must follow the guidelines of the MyPlate initiative and have at least three of the four elements present. Each team will have a professional culinary coach/adviser helping them along the way.
After 45 minutes, the dishes from each team will be presented to the panel of three judges for tasting and judgment. The panel this time will be one lovely and talented writer (Tammy Paolino from the Courier-Post), one lovely and talented pastry chef (Manny Agigian from DiBartolo Bakery), and one potential idiot (erm, that would be yours truly).
Come and watch the fun. Maybe you will even get a chance to help out (special culinary gifts will be solicited by the mentors for each team). In addition to the competition, there will be plenty of sweet things to sample as well as you peruse Dessert Alley. There will also be raffles and giveaways throughout the evening.
Sounds like fun? You know it does!
Tickets for the event are $10 in advance and $15 at the door. Come out and help support Food Bank of South Jersey’s healthy initiatives.
