It was four years ago this past week that South Jersey lost its biggest and most respected voice in the food scene. Ed Hitzel was a giant, having covered the food and dining scene in South Jersey for decades as a writer and as a radio and television host. You can still see his presence at some restaurants that bear the “Hitzel Approved” sticker on the front door. And yet, it seems like Ed’s legacy is already starting to fade away – which is a real shame.
On June 25th, a celebration took place to honor the legacy of Anthony Bourdain. A New Jersey food trail has been established with places Bourdain visited on the New Jersey episode of “Parts Unknown”. And while the trail gives some love to South Jersey restaurants such as Donkey’s in Camden and Lucille’s in Barnegat, it made me think about Ed Hitzel and the amount of love he gave the region. And I came to these thoughts:
Shouldn’t there be an Ed Hitzel food trail in South Jersey? Shouldn’t we have a day to celebrate Ed’s legacy?
I could imagine a trail that stopped at places such as Mamma Mia’s in Marmora, Ward’s Pastry Shop in Ocean City, The Franklinville Inn, and Golden Pyramid in Mays Landing just to name a few. I’m sure people who new Ed better than I could rattle off many more names.
People pass through and life moves on regardless of how we feel about it. But I hope that we don’t forget Ed Hitzel, the likes of which we will never see again in South Jersey.
What’s New on the Menu?
The Iron Room in Atlantic City has started its transition from Albany Avenue to Tennessee Avenue, beginning with breakfast. Breakfast and lunch menus are the biggest changes that the new location will offer, along with an extensive wine list. The Albany Avenue location will remain open through Labor Day. Along with with new location look for the opening of Rhythm & Spirits, which will feature live music and cocktails.
Bleu Bear Bakery in Haddonfield is now offering breakfast ‘sammies’, crepes and waffles.
Auburn Road Vineyard & Winery in Pilesgrove Twp. has posted its menu for ‘What’s For Dinner?’ Fridays for the month of July.
Back again for the 144th time, it’s the Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Festival in Hammonton – the longest running Italian festival in the United States. This year the festival runs from Wednesday, July 10th through Tuesday, July 16th.
The Ocean County Fair takes place next week, starting on Wednesday, July 10th and going until Sunday, July 14th.
Follow the Food Trucks
This weekend is the annual “Truck”erton Food Truck & Brew Fest at Tuckerton Seaport. This year’s fest adds a side of bacon with bacon-heavy food items. There will also be a piggy race (really).
The second annual Galloway Food Truck Festival is this Saturday, July 6th, from 2PM to 8PM at the municipal complex on Jimmie Leeds Road. Thirty food trucks (!!!) along with a beer and a wine garden will be there.
Saturday night is the City of Millville Fireworks and Food Truck Festival at New Jersey Motorsports Park from 5PM to 10PM.
The first Anglesea Night Market of the season in North Wildwood is this Sunday, July 7th from 5PM to 10PM. Almost twenty food trucks will be on hand, including Nick’s Roast Beef, Lucky Bones, The Cow and the Curd, and Beast of the Street.

Cape May Distillery’s Summer menu is now available.
Recklesstown Farm Distillery in Columbus is not officially open yet, but the distillery is having “practice” openings. You can enjoy cocktails using the house spirits this weekend – July 5th from 4PM to 9PM, July 6th from 12PM to 9PM, and July 7th from 11AM to 5PM.
Some new brews to consider for your weekend outdoor activities: Valkyrie Two-Forty DIPA from Backward Flag Brewing, Simon Sais orange saison from 13th Child Brewery, and Cranberry Summer Blonde Ale from Toms River Brewing.
Going to the Market
This weekend will be a double shot of farmers and makers markets in Atlantic City. On Saturday, July 6th, Tennessee Avenue Beer Hall will be the site for Atlantic City Fresh from 1PM to 5PM. The pop-up market will happen every Saturday through Labor Day. On Sunday, July 7th, the first Atlantic City Community Market, will be happening at Bourre on New York Avenue from 12PM to 4PM.
And tonight and every Friday through the summer is a Friday Farm Night at Johnson’s Locust Hall Farm in Jobstown from 5PM to 10PM.
Our food-mad friends have been out and about: Marilyn Johnson at South Jersey Food Scene checked out the new Bagelati Bagel & Gelato Ice Cream in Cinnaminson, Holly at Fueled by LOLZ went to the Pleasantville Diner, and Good Food New Jersey made a stop at Rocco’s Townhouse in Hammonton.
