Friday Foodstuffs 3.12.10: Elements Cafe Wants to Know What You Had for Dinner

We food bloggers are, admittedly, a strange lot.

It’s not enough for us to just enjoy a good meal, be it at home or in a restaurant. We have to write about it. And even that’s not good enough; we need to take pictures of the food we’re about to devour in its un-fork-and-knife’d state.

If you’re one of us, i.e. you like to snap a picture or two of a pretty dish, seek professional help. No no no…what I meant to say is that if you do snap food pics, Chef Fred Kellerman of Elements Cafe in Haddon Heights would like to see them. Why? It could win you a dinner for two, that’s why. From now until the end of March, Elements Cafe is running a ‘What I Had for Dinner’ Contest. To enter, submit a photo of a recent meal prepared by you along with a description of the meal. The person who sends most appealing meal, as decided by Chef Fred, will win a dinner for two at Elements.

Granted, it’s not your normal contest. But it is a contest that celebrates your food geekiness, and how could I not support such a contest, since being a food blogger makes me a food geek to the nth degree.

Chef Fred is also participating in the current Chef Wars battle taking place this month, and we hope to have an interview with him posted next week.

OK, so St. Patrick’s Day is coming up, and I loves me a good corned beef and cabbage meal. And potatoes. And soda bread. But here’s the thing: St. Patty’s Day is really a drinking event, not so much an eating event – at least to me. So here’s a few drinking events to check out this weekend:

On Saturday, High Street Grill is having its next installment of Beer Wars, and the competitors will be Allagash (which is not really Irish but Belgian) and Lagunitas (which doesn’t sound Irish at all). The fun starts at 12PM, and the cost is $25 per person.

Saturday will also give you a chance to board the Shamrock Shuttle in Gloucester City and ‘visit’ ten different pubs throughout the city. And by ‘visit’, of course, I mean ‘drink’ – which is why the shuttle part will come in handy. The shuttle will be running from 3PM to 9PM. And it’s free!

If you’re looking for something a little more, erm, dignified, a Wine, Appetizer and Cheese Party is being held at the 1893 Wenonah Railroad Station in, well, Wenonah. The party will be from 4PM to 7PM, and will cost you $18 at the door. And those who come are being asked to wear their Sunday best, so look nice for a change, ‘kay?

Laurita Winery in New Egypt will be having a Shamrock Festival Weekend from 12PM to 5PM on Saturday and Sunday. Besides their usual wine selections, enjoy traditional Irish music as well as traditional Irish food from their cafe.

The kitchen classrooms will be shamrock-free this weekend. At In The Kitchen Cooking School in Haddonfield, you can learn how to prepare Dessert Classics starting at 1PM on Saturday. Later on, Kitchen Kapers in Moorestown will have Cooking for Couples – Design Your Own Pizza from 6PM to 8PM. On Sunday, it’s Kids in the Kitchen – Breakfast for Dinner at Kitchen Kapers
from 1:30PM to 3PM.

In addition to these classes, Bellview Winery in Landisville will be conducting an Intro to Wine Tasting Seminar on Saturday at 6PM. The cost is $30.

And in the news this week…

The big news this week, and F Scott and Zelda have been on top of this, is that UnCork NJ passed in the state Senate. This is the bill that will allow direct shipment of wines from wineries out of state, as well as wineries in Jersey, to individuals. Great news for wine lovers as well as for Jersey wineries.

Haagen-Dazs is looking to make a big move in Cumberland County. I’d like to see them make a move here in Forked River, too. Preferably next to my house.

Beer raids in Philly this past week? What year is this?

It’s no fluke (ba-dum ching) – the fluke season will be open on Memorial Day and Labor Day this year.

Enjoy your weekend, and try to stay dry!
